Synopsis
Rose and Sammy enjoy an idyllic life with love, a Hollywood Hills home, and a curious son. During a party, Sammy assigns unusual significance to it, while Rose juggles preparations amid distractions. The unexpected arrival of Helen, who claims residence there, oscillates between confusion and lucidity. Strangely, Helen possesses intimate knowledge of the house and its guests: an Ingenue, a director, and Rose's former flame. Helen's revelations during the party spark drama, unearthing hidden truths and compelling Rose to confront her past, future, and the desire for change.

sxsw feature #10
feeling moved by this, and pretty refreshed too — i’ve been kind of bored and fatigued by a lot of cultural discourse lately that tries to be about A Universal Womanhood that i don’t resonate with. (and like often as a black woman but a lot of times just because We Are All Girls as a thesis is just fucking boring!) i think this movie is very thoughtful about femininity as a product and how that creates ugly common experiences without flattening all of its characters into one thing. when it does come time for rose to monologue about her experience of her gender, it really feels earned. (i realize that this paragraph just reads as a barbie diss but i don’t only mean barbie)
really good, well-thought out writing and directing from nadia conners (who unsurprisingly developed this as a play before the pandemic hit and made her refigure it), and really great performances.

i went into this movie w/ NO expectations & was absolutely blown away by how fuckin good it was.
so uniquely funny, yet could be so serious & so beautifully heartfelt. films that make you want to reach out & hold the person on the screen make me WEAK... this one definitely had me holding back some sniffles.
i would love to see this film again & maybe a third time to truly portray my thoughts, but for now...
lucien flores i would unfortunately most definitely absolutely positively follow you anywhere.

SXSW #17:
Initially crafted as a stage play, this very much feels like it was meant for a theater. This is a film that throws a bunch of rich LA types into a fancy house mixed with an unexpected wandering visitor and lets the drama unfold. It was an interesting perspective into how motherhood can completely disrupt a life path, and a window into the harshness of an industry that chews and spits out women. I’m not sure that this kind of film was meant for me, but it seemed to resonate with some of the crowd my girlfriend and I saw it with.

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
If I had a nickel for every woman Pedro Pascal got pregnant in this movie, I’d have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice, right?
