Rigs of the 2024 Tour Divide (Part One): Flat-Bar Bikes (2024)

Every year, hundreds of riders from across the globe gather in Banff, Alberta, for the Tour Divide with plans to ride the roughly 2,700-mile route along the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route south toward Mexico. The mix of riders and bike setups is always fascinating. There are ultra-endurance athletes sacrificing sleep and other creature comforts to chase a sub-15-day pace, and there are more casual riders who might take a month or longer to finish. No matter how they ride, they’ll all experience the same route. That’s the beauty of the Tour Divide.

Last year’s Tour Divide had some big names lined up at the start line, including Lael Wilcox, Alexandera Houchin, Marie-Soleil Blais, Andrew Kulmatiski, Ulrich Bartholmoes, and Justinas Leveika, to name a few. Ulrich ended up winning the race with a time of 14 days, 3 hours, and 23 minutes. Lael Wilcox was the first woman to finish in 16 days and 20 hours. Alexandera Houchin set a new women’s singlespeed record, besting her 2019 record time by exactly two hours, with a time of 18 days, 18 hours, and 26 minutes. A few of these folks are returning this year, including Marie-Soleil Blais, Justinas Leveika, and Ulrich Bartholmoes, and we’re excited to see Ana Jager (the first woman to finish 2022 Tour Divide) and 15-year-old Edyn Teitge participating. The late Mike Hall set the record back in 2016 with a time of 13 days, 22 hours, and 51 minutes—an incredible time that stands today.

Again this year, we decided to break the rigs into two parts to showcase the overwhelming number of submissions better. In fact, this rig roundup is our most jam-packed to date, with over 150 rig details submitted. Everett Bedard

Age 51 / Saskatoon, Saskatchewan (Canada)

BIKE: This year, I will once again be doing a record amount of hike-a-bike next to my new steed Ol Blue, my 2024 Trek Procaliber 9.6. Ol Blue comes stock with a 32T chainring, and in the rear is a 10-51T cassette (pretty much the reason I switched to a hardtail. Ol Blue will be rolling with a set of 29 x 2.35” Vitorria Mezcals on Bontrager Kovee line 30s. When actually riding, I will enjoy a Brooks B17 saddle on a Redshift seat post, as well as profile design aerobars with a 70mm riser. And for hand comfort, I threw on a pair of SQlabs inner bar ends.
BAGS: At the heart of Ol Blue is a sick looking Shakapacks full frame bag. On the bars, tucked under the aerobars is a Salsa anything cage bag. A couple Revelate Designs feed bags. Strapped to the fork by a Tailfin suspension fork mounts is a couple of Salsa Anything cages with two Sea to Summit drybags. Top tube Revelate Mag-Tank 2000 to finish things off up front. In the rear will be a jerry can on the seatpost, and two Sea to Summit Drybags attached to an Aeroe Spider rack.
GEAR HIGHLIGHTS: Sleep system includes a Stormbreak 1, McKinley Trekker sleep, bag, and Klymit pillow. Garmin 830, SPOT tracker, Magicshine RN 3000 headlight, with a Biolite 20000mah powerbank. On my back will be a Camelback mule hydration pack. A Befree Katadyn to filter water, with some tablets for possible cow water and such. And to top it all off, my Bike Doctor Detours jersey. YOU’RE MY BOY BLUE!

Noah Bodewes

Age 23 / Durango, Colorado (USA)

BIKE: 2021 Canyon Exceed SLX with 29 x 2.2″ Maxxis Icon tires, 1×12 drivetrain, no dynamo.
BAGS: I will be running Tailfin Aeropack rack with a custom framebag, and a small front pack. I will also be using a small Ultra pack as well.
GEAR HIGHLIGHTS: I’m running a pretty lightweight frame so using a Tailfin Aeropack to help reduce some of the weight off the seat post of a normal pack.

Nick Bohler

Age 55 / Poseyville, Indiana (USA)

BIKE: I’ll be racing the Tour Dovide 2024 on a Salsa Timberjack with a Shimano XT group set, 4 piston brakes, 180mm rotors, Bontrager seat, Thomson seat post, Thomson Stem, Thomson carbon bars, Profile Aero bars, SPD pedals, Hunt wide trail aluminum wheels, Son Dynamo Hub, Ergo grips and Maxxis 29 x 2.25″ Ikon tires.

Josh Brearley

Age 44 / Canberra (Australia)

BIKE: I will be riding (not racing) the Tour Divide on a carbon 2023 Rodeo Labs Traildonkey 4.0. The build features a Seido MGV carbon fork, Rodeo Labs 2.0 carbon wheels with Vittoria Mezcal 29 x 2.1” tyre up front and a Maxxis Ikon 29 x 2.0” tyre on the rear. Other features include Cane Creek eesilk+ carbon suspension seat post with Selle Italia SMP TRK saddle, alloy Redshift Shockstop Pro suspension stem, alloy Controltech Falcon tri stem mount along with carbon Profile Design 50C aero bar extensions, SQLab 311 FL-X carbon handlebar with SQLab 411 2.0 innerbarends, Ergon GP2 grips, Level Ultimate brake levers, Force AXS brake calipers, 180mm disc rotor up front and a 160mm on the rear, Zeno Q-Connector hydraulic brake hose quick couplers, AXS blips, K-Lite Ultra adventure lightning system and Shimano PD-T8000 XT pedals.

GEAR HIGHLIGHTS: Zpacks Plex Solo tent will serve as my shelter. I will be using a Sea to Summit Reactor fleece sleeping bag liner paired with a SOL Escape Bivvy, Mont Zero ultralight down jacket, Montbell light down pants, and Therm-a-Rest NeoAir XLite sleeping pad as my sleeping system. I will be operating a Garmin GPSMAP 66i with inReach technology along with an Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max (utilizing Komoot and Gaia GPS apps) together for navigation.

Axel Brenner

Age 30 / Zurich (Switzerland)

BIKE: I’ll ride an Esker Japhy Ti with 120mm front suspension. Son Dynamo hub, lights from Supernova mounted to a 3D printed Aerobar bridge. 29 x 2.25″ Vittoria Mezcal, 1×12 SLX mechanical, 4-piston SLX brakes, DT Swiss wheels, Ergon grips, Deda Aerobars.
BAGS: Frame and saddle bags are some old Porcelain Rocket, still very good. DIY Front Harness for my sleep system, and feedbags from Rockgeist.
GEAR HIGHLIGHTS: OR Helium Bivy to sleep at least a little bit sheltered. DIY front harness.

Ryan Brink

Age 36 / Durango, Colorado (USA)

BIKE: I’ll be riding a Revel Wayward. Thanks to the team at Durango Cyclery for helping make this bike come together. 29 x 2.2″ Maxxis Ikons, Shimano XTR 12-speed.
BAGS: I have a mixture of bags I’ve collected over the years including Revelate Designs Sweet Roll and seat bag, Custom Rogue Panda frame bag, sh*t Snack Bags, and Bedrock Bag gas tank. Some of these bags my wife has graciously allowed me to borrow!
GEAR HIGHLIGHTS: This year I’m excited to be running a flat bar with inner bars and aero bars. In 2021, I ran drop bars and didn’t pay much attention to my co*ckpit, this year I feel like I have a dialled and comfortable setup to take me to the finish!

Marie-Soleil Blais

Age 35 / Bromont, Quebec (Canada)

BIKE: I’ll be racing the Tour Divide for a 2nd consecutive year on a 2022 Cannondale Scalpel HT. The bike features a set of Duke Racing Wheels (LuckyJack SLS4 carbon 26-28) with a SON28 dynamo, a Rockshox 100mm suspension, a modified electronic SRAM Eagle 1×12 drivetrain with a 34T chainring, and not pictured will be some Vittoria Mezcal tires. Flat bar and aero bars, Ergon SR Pro Women saddle, and Reverb dropper post.
BAGS: I’m riding the Tailfin system with one of their prototype Aeropack with a carbon rack and 2x 10L rear pannier, a 1.5 top-tube bag, and a 3L downtube bag. I chose the Revelate Design Rifter for the frame bag. For the co*ckpit, I have a burrito roll mounted in between my aero bars, 2x insulated feed bags for bottles, and 1x for food. For water storage, I’m carrying a 2L Hydrapak and BeFree filter in the downtube.
GEAR HIGHLIGHTS: For the desert section, I’m bringing an additional 3L Hydrapak inside an insulated pouch. I’m using the Mountain Laurel Design FKT bivy, Therm-a-Rest Uberlight mat, and Therm-a-Rest Vesper 7C quilt for my sleep system. Garmin Edge 840 for navigation.

Marisa Brignole

Age 33 / East Granby, Connecticut (USA)

BIKE: 2023 Giant XTC Advanced 3. I am riding with Vittoria Mezcal 2.25” tires, a Shimano 12-speed drivetrain with a 32T Wolf Tooth chainring. I swapped out my Brooks Saddle for a Selle SMP Gel Saddle.
BAGS: I have a REI Co-op Link Seat Pack, Ortlieb fuel pack, Ortlieb Handlebar-Pack, VENFOREST Bike Handlebar Bag, and an Outpost Elite Frame Bag.
GEAR HIGHLIGHTS: For my sleep setup, I will be using a Black Diamond Spotlight Bivy, Enlightened Equipment Enigma Sleeping Quilt, Therm-a-Rest NeoAir Xlite NXT for my sleep pad. I’m carrying a Garmin inReach 2 for tracking and a Garmin Edge 830 for navigation. A bit about water. A 1.5L Nalgene bottle with Source SC-2031160200 Hydration Converter Tube so my Sawyer filter hooks up to the wide mouth and to a smart water bottle. I have a 1.5L titanium water bottle mounted to one side of the fork between that and the Nalgene I can measure and boil water if I need to. I am also carrying two 1L smart water bottles and a Camelbak to put me at the recommended 7 Liters. Quick shout-out: I love my Tailfin Suspension Fork Mounts!

Michael Browning

Age 56 / Athens, Alabama (USA)

BIKE: 2012 Salsa El Mariachi with a Niner Carbon fork. 1 x 11 drivetrain. 29 x 2.2″ RaceKings with SON 28 Dyno Hub.
BAGS: Generic frame bag, a variety of Sea to Summit bags, and Revelate Designs bags.
GEAR HIGHLIGHTS: Going to splurge and carry an ultralight chair.

Kevin Burrell

Age 49 / North Bend, Washington (USA)

BIKE: I’ll be racing the Tour Divide on a 2022 Specialized Epic Hardtail. I’m running SRAM AXS 1×12 with a 34T chainring and 10-52T cassette. It has carbon Roval 29er rims with 2.35” Vittoria Mezcals. I added a Son Dynamo hub to charge my gadgets, backup lights, and run my kLite. I’m using hand-me-down Bontrager aero-bars with an XLab TT bar-mounted bottle holder and computer mount.
BAGS: Up front is a Salty Roll from Revelate Designs. The frame bag is custom-made from Rogue Panda. The top tube, down tube, and Aeropack are from Tailfin, I added Rogue Panda’s new handlebar harness to keep the Salty Roll firmly in place.
GEAR HIGHLIGHTS: I’m bringing a 30° REI quilt coupled with cheap down booties, pants, and an OR puffy jacket. I have a Big Agnes Fly Creek UL 1 tent for shelter along with their Rapide SL sleep pad for added insulation and comfort. Two Wahoos will guide my way, with a phone as emergency backup for navigation.

Adam Carlson

Age 47 / Queenstown (New Zealand)

BIKE: 2018 Kona Honzo. Nothing special but does the job. Deba aero bars with all the risers. DT Swiss on the back end, SP dynamo on the front. Busch Mueller dynamo lights. Shimano for the stopping and the going bits. 29 x 2.25″ Vittoria Mezcal tires.
BAGS: A mixed bag of bags. Homemade frame bag, feed bags and glovebox. Topeak tail bag and Sothern Lite Packs for the front roll harness and toptube bag.
GEAR HIGHLIGHTS: Waterproof mittens with Polarbear gloves under for warm fingers. Tent and sleeping mat and bag for sleeping comfort. Solid waterproof jacket. A little stove and pot for coffee when I need it. A head full of excitement, nerves and hopefully some good decisions.

Chris Chou

Age 36 / Toutle, Washington (USA)

GEAR HIGHLIGHTS: The Beacon 2 really is a marvel—simplifying a lot within a robust package. I’ll be hydrating primarily via a Rab Veil 12 running vest with plenty of stash spots for snacks and accouterments. I also really love the Code Stealths—excellent stopping power and modulation with a hose angle that works so much better than the standard with handlebar bags. Swood Twisted T-Bar keeps everything playing nice up front behind the scenes.

Age 35 / Glasgow (Scotland)

Dan Connell

Age 28 / Goleta, California (USA)

BIKE: This year I’ll be galloping on a Trek Supercaliber. Leather saddle, electronic beepboops on the aero bars, tons of milk carrying capacity. 29 x 2.25” Vittoria Mezcals, 1×12 SRAM Wireless Transmission, No Dynamo.
BAGS: A beautiful blend of Tailfin and South City Stitchworks. SCSW full custom frame bag. Tailfin Aeropack, Top Tube Bag, Suspension Fork Mounts with cage packs and bottle cages.
GEAR HIGHLIGHTS: Taking the 5-star sleep approach with a full kit: synthetic RAB sleeping bag, inflatable pad, Mountain Laurel Design Bivy, pillow, eye mask, down booties, ear plugs in case I #SplitThePit. GoreWear waterproof socks, an assortment of Jelly Bellies, and a fire in my soul will all be equally important in completing this Rocky Mountain journey.

Ashley Cordingley

Age 39 / Innerleithen (United Kingdom)

BIKE: Carrying me along the way will be my custom Titanium Titus Silkroad with carbon fork. It’s built up using a mix of Shimano 12-speed XT/XTR with an E13 cassette. It is rolling on a set of custom carbon wheels from Just Riding Along hand-built in York laced into a SON 28 dynamo. The touch points are SQ Labs and Ergon. 29 x 2.2″ Continental Continental Race King tires.
BAGS: I made my own frame, top tube, and tool bags, and tri bar harness I’m using them in conjunction with Restrap dry bags and Voile strap on an Ortlieb Quickrack.
GEAR HIGHLIGHTS: I will be navigating using my Garmin 1040 solar. For lights: Exposure lights custom made my dynamo lights to fit the rack and tri bar setup. The sleep kit will be a lightweight tent (Big Agnes Flycreek UL BP), sleeping bag, (Mountain Equipment Helium 250) and inflatable mat (Therm-a-Rest NeoAir). I will be wearing a mix of 7mesh, RAB and Haglofts.

Mike Descombaz

Age 49 / Duluth, Minnesota (USA)

BIKE: Custom Carbon Hardtail by NK bikes out of Hannibal Missouri, Rene Herse endurance casing 29 x 2.2″ Fleecer Ridge tires, Eagle XX1 drivetrain.
BAGS: Urban Desert frame bag, seat pack, top tube bag and handlebar bag. Two 1L bottles mounted to fork on Widefoot cages and two water bottles in Urban Desert bottle bags.
GEAR HIGHLIGHTS: Using a Big Agnes Copper Spur UL1 tent, Sea to Summit sleeping bag, and Western Mountaineering Summerlite sleeping bag. Using a combo of my iPhone and Garmin eTrex 22 for navigation. Bike is weighing around 53lbs with 4L of water, but no food. Shooting for 30 days, but willing to take 60 days (or more).

Dylan Disarro

Age 25 / Salt Lake City, Utah (USA)

BIKE: Trek ProCaliber. Bontrager Kovee RSL Wheels with 29 x 2.2″ Continental Race Kings, 12-speed SRAM AXS with Ratio Technology pulley cage, Leap Blip AXS shifters.
BAGS: Restrap frame bag, top tube bag, and front aero bar bag. Sea to Summit dry bag on the Aeroe rack.
GEAR HIGHLIGHTS: Instead of a dynamo I have a super fast charging system from Anker. The battery charges 99 watt hours/26,650 mah in under 50 minutes. I’ll have two of them. The bike is built to party with a Fox 34 Fork and dropper post.

Ryan Van Duzer

Age 45 / Boulder, Colorado (USA)

BIKE: I’ll be riding a 2024 Priority 600ADX with the Pinion and Gates drivetrain. Marzocchi Bomber Z2 100mm suspension, OneUp dropper post, and a KICKSTAND! 600% gear range, 29 x 2.35″ Vittoria Mezcals. Redshift aerobars, no dynamo.
BAGS: The bright orange bags are upcycled and made by Green Guru. Aeroe Rack with 12L dry bags on each side.
GEAR HIGHLIGHTS: ElevenPine Uprising Shorts and padded liner, my trusty ol’ blue merino riding shirt, Outdoor Vitals Vario puffy and Tushar rain jacket, Therm-a-Rest 32 down quilt, Klymit sleeping pad, a 3L bladder in my frame bag along with 3L in my hydration pack + bottle between my aerobars. Fenix BC26R front light, MSR Hubba Hubba 2-person tent, Garmin 1040 Solar, Anker 26,800mAh power bank, and I’ll be documenting with my GoPro 11, iPhone 14 Pro, and DJI Mini 3 Pro drone.

Duncan Foster

Age 52 / Carlingford (Ireland)

BIKE: My bike for the 2024 Tour Divide is a custom Ti build from Travers Bikes. It’s running a Pinion/Gates drivetrain, sports Ti Jones Bars, a Ti seat post from Alpkit, with a C15 Brooks saddle. I’m hoping a Lauf TR Boost fork, and some Profile Design aero bars will help keep my hands in good condition. The wheels are Vittoria Mezcal tyres on carbon Nextie rims mounted to SON28 and Hope Pro 5 hubs. Lights are Klite Bikepacker Ultra, and a pair of Klite Qubes for all day peace of mind.
BAGS: The bags are a mix of custom-made bags from Merit Gear (frame bag and a pair of big feed bags for all the snacks), and off-the-shelf bags from Apidura (bars, and seat post), and Tailfin (forks, held on with BarYak Mules).
GEAR HIGHLIGHTS: I’m hoping for cozy nights in my Aura OXY1 down bag, and Therm-a-Rest mat, inside a Lanshan Pro 1 tent. A pair of Wahoo Bolts (v1 & v2) will keep me on track. I’ll be wearing a bright orange OMM MtnFire running vest for visibility and extra capacity for food and water.

Joe Fox

Age 40 / Kansas City, Missouri (USA)

BIKE: Chumba Yaupon Titanium flat bar with a Rockshox Sid Ultimate. 29 x 2.35″ Vittoria Mezcal, 1 x 12 SRAM AXS (AXS Dropper as well), Whisky rims laced up to DT Swiss 350 hubs, Lupine headlight, Doom bell.
BAGS: All bags were made by my good buddy, and the incredibly talented Andrew Strempke of Dispersed Bikepacking. Full length top tube bag, full size frame bag, handlebar roll, and a sweet new seat bag.
GEAR HIGHLIGHTS: Zpacks bivy sack and sleeping bag, Big Agnes sleeping pad.

Kyle Gilbert

Age 28 / Austin, Texas (USA)

BIKE: I’ll be ripping on a Why Cycles El Jefe, single speed (38x19T) fitted with a pair of Zipp moto3’s, Maxxis Crossmark ll 2.25″ tires and a SON dynamo hub laced to the front. I will also have a Klite ultra light up front paired with a headlamp for the things in arms reach, and an extra Fenix light for back up and hiking. Bike weighs 57lbs with all gear, water and clothing packed on.
BAGS: I will be running two 8L panniers, two feed bags, one Jpaks top tube bag, and a roll top dry bag on the top of my rack. Also, a hydration vest with a 1.5L bladder, along with a 1.5L bottle on the downtube.
GEAR HIGHLIGHTS: Two of my favorite pieces of gear on this bike include the always beautiful South City Stich Works frame bag and pannier set. Zach, the owner and operator of SCSW worked with me on some pretty radical ideas and surpassed expectations. These bags fit and operate just how I imagined. I would also like to give a huge shout out to Old Man Mountain, they sponsored me by providing The Divide rack, it is super solid, and had been put though some good testing leading up the divide. Can’t wait to see how it does day after day.

Liam Glen

Age 33 / Bristol (United Kingdom)

BIKE: I’ll be racing the Tour divide as part of a Triple Crown attempt onboard a Stooge Mk-Ti: essentially a titanium Mk6, but with a truss fork with 80mm offset. It’s a beast. Kitted out with Hunt Proven XC wheels and a SON 28 dynamo, Hope brakes and assorted bling, Klite lights and dual USB charger, with the rest of the build being re-used from old bikes or excavated from the parts bin. Vittoria Mezcal 29 x 2.6″ on the front and 29 x 2.35″ on the rear, no inserts; 1×11 Shimano Deore drivetrain (36t x 51t lowest gear).
BAGS: Tailfin bags all round: custom full framebag with horizontal divider, a prototype handlebar bag (largest size as I’ve probably got the most bar to tyre clearance in the whole field!) and a prototype Aeropack. My Klite charger and a few electronics will be in a Tailfin top tube bag plus I’ve a couple of Alpkit stem bags for bear spray, food and other bits I want to keep at hand.
GEAR HIGHLIGHTS: My ace up my sleeve is my rain kit, which I’m hoping will keep me moving forwards no matter what: 7mesh Skypilot jacket, 7mesh Thunderpants and cold weather commercial fishing gloves. That said, sh*t can and does happen, so I’m carrying a Slingfin Splitwing tarp and groundsheet for shelter, along with a proper sleeping bag and mat.

GEAR HIGHLIGHTS: Excited to definitely sleep enough in an Enlightened Equipment quilt on a Nemo foam pad (bladder for a billow) inside my Slingfin Portal 1 ten. Sinewave Beacon 2 to light the night and keep the devices juicing.

BIKE: I’ll be racing the Tour Divide on a Rodeo Labs Flaanimal Ti. The bike is rolling 27.5 x 2.25″ Vittoria Mezcals and a 60mm MRP Baxter suspension fork, SON dynamo hub wired to a Sinewave Beacon and Supernova E3 tailight, with my wife’s old time trial clip on aerobars from her road racing days. Wheels with NOBL rims with a Schwalbe Racing Ray tire on the front and Maxxis Crossmark II on the back both 29 x 2.25″. A mechanical Shimano XTR 1×12 drivetrain with a Wolftooth 34T chainring. A SON hub dynamo powers an Edelux front and rear light and a Forumslader with a USB outlet.

BIKE: I’ll be racing the Tour Divide on a 2023 Cannondale Scalpel 4. I’m running the stock 1×12 drivetrain with a 32T chainring. The tires will be swapped over to Vittoria Mezcal 2.25” the day before the race, so they aren’t featured in the photo. My bars are Tumbleweed Persuaders and I’ve got the Profile Design Sonic Ergo 35A aero bars attached to them with 70mm risers for extra comfort.
BAGS: I’m pretty well exclusively running Restrap bags. I love dry bag + harness system of the handlebar and saddle bags, it makes setting up and packing up a breeze! The only other bags I have are Riverside stem bottle holders from Decathlon.
GEAR HIGHLIGHTS: My sleep kit is made up of the Rab Trailhead bivi, an MEC Talon down quilt, and a Therm-a-Rest NeoAir XLite sleeping pad. I’ll be using a Garmin Edge 540 for Navigation and some Fenix lights to brighten up the night.

Robert “Hoss” Kleinschmidt

BIKE: I will be racing the 2024 Tour Divide again on my trusty 2019 Salsa Cutthroat. I have made changes to the stock drivetrain by upgrading the crank to carbon fiber and changing the front chainring to an Absolute Black 34T. I changed the drivetrain over to the 12-speed Eagle using the 12-speed eThirteen 9-50T cassette, the Eagle GX Shifter, and GX derailleur with Kogle Bearings oversized pulleys. Elevation Wheel Co. out of Colorado Springs built my 29r wheelset, which consists of an Industry Nine Torch rear hub, a SON 28 front hub, both laced to Spank OohBah rims with steel spokes. I will run the same tires as I did in 2021 with the 2.2 Maxxis Icon 3C EXO TR 120TPI
BAGS: Frame bag was made by BikeBagDude. I am also using the Revelate Designs Handlebar Harness with the Periphery Bag out front and the Terrapin 14L bag mounted to the Aeroe rear rack. The handlebar harness is attached to the bike via the BarYak Expedition SL 2000 w/Carbon Bar Ends. Extra food-carrying capacity is added with the Revelate Designs Feed Bags, Mag Tank 2000, and Jerry Can. I also have a Salsa Anything cradle mounted to the fork which will carry my Puffy Warm kit in a Sea to Summit Dry Bag.
GEAR HIGHLIGHTS: I am using the Big Agnes Copper Spur HV UL2 Bikepack Tent for sleeping. I can carry up to 4 liters of water on the frame and fork-mounted water bottle cages. 2 cages are attached to the Aeroe rack arms using the SKS Anywhere water bottle mounts. I made my own bracket system to hold two Anker PowerCore that will supplement the SON28 hub. Using two tire pump frame brackets and my added hardware, the PowerCore’s are tucked up nicely under the handlebar stem. To date, with proper charge/usage management, I can go more than 4 days without searching for an AC Outlet.

BIKE: I’ll be lining up for my first attempt at the Tour Divide on my beloved Black Sheep hardtail. Singlespeed as always. Velo Orange crazy bars mounted with Profile Designs arm rests (no bars) to help keep the hands and body cozy. 29 x 2.2″ Conti Race Kings (thanks for the recommendation, Nate!), 34x18T gearing, SP Dynamo hub mounted to a Whisky rim.
BAGS: I’ve got a few beautiful and incredibly well made bags by Andrew and Katie from Dispersed. Top tube bag will carry some tools, electronics and food, while the frame bag will house my puffy jacket, sock drawer, and a bit more room for snacks. A well loved Mountain Laurel Designs drybag strapped to the rear rack will carry my sleep kit and a few layers. Trusty Revelate Designs feed bags will be dedicated to toiletries, chain lube and other easy to reach/heavy use items.
GEAR HIGHLIGHTS: Beyond excited to put my new Mica rear rack through its paces. The rack has been impressively stable so far, and will carry my sleep kit and two water bottles. Sinewave Beacon will light up the night, and hopefully keep portable batteries charged to minimize time stopped for charging electronics.

BIKE: I’ll be racing the Tour Divide on my custom full rigid Tulipp mountain bike with sliding dropouts, a 1×12 Shimano drivetrain and an Enve MTB fork. Son28 dynamo hub laced to a 29″ Stan’s Arch rim with a 2.25″ Mezcal up front. Hope Pro4 laced to a Stan’s Arch rim and 2.1″ Mezcal at the back.

BAGS: I made all of my own bags except the feedbags, including some 3D printed buckles (How many of those will fail at the worst possible time?) The frame bag will hold an Apidura 3L bladder. I’ll also have a bottle in one of the feedbags for electrolytes.
GEAR HIGHLIGHTS: Sleep kit – OR Helium Bivy, Mountain Hardware Rook 30° bag, Klymit Static V Insulated Pad. Also noteworthy, is my BarJam inspired bar bag mounting system – a wooden dowel mounted on top of my aerobars. This also serves as a home for my Wahoo Roam and headlights.

BIKE: I’ll be racing the Tour Divide on a 2021 Canyon Exceed. I’m running ye olde Vittoria Mezcals in 29 x 2.25″, Light Bicycle rims, and a Shimano 1×12 setup with a 34T ring up front. I actually built up a Cutthroat last year but decided on this instead.
BAGS: I’m running a DIY framebag (hydration bladder, gear compartment, two map pockets), Tailfin Aeropack, Rogue Panda handlebar bags (mounted to the frame!), a Revelate Mag-Tank 2000, Apidura downtube bag, and a Sea to Summit dry bag I had lying around that just hangs on the aero bars.
GEAR HIGHLIGHTS: I only have one actual bottle (for carbs) and it sits right between the aero bars. Everything else is in bladders; one in the frame bag, one on my back, for a total water carry of ~4.5L. I’m carrying a ZPacks Plex Solo tent, 30F sleeping bag and thin EVA mat. I tried bivy bags, but I’m trying to avoid type III fun TBH.

BIKE: I’ll be racing the 2024 Tour Divide aboard a Specialized Chisel hardtail built with a SRAM XX1 Eagle AXS 12-speed drivetrain, 34T front chainring, and 10-52T cassette. It features a FOX 32 Factory 100mm fork and a non-dynamo Roval carbon wheelset fitted with Vittoria Mezcal 29 x 2.25” tires. Contact points include an Ergon saddle and grips, trimmed down carbon flat bars and Profile Designs aero bars w/ AXS shifter blips, SQLabs innerbarends, and Shimano XTR pedals.
BAGS: My mishmash setup includes a custom Dyneema framebag from Rockgeist, which holds a 3L bladder, water filter, and snacks. A Tailfin carbon rack with 2 x 5L mini panniers holds my sleep kit and warm/rain clothes. Apidura top tube bag, feed bags, and downtube bag will be for more snacks, electronics, and repair + first aid kits. Aero bar mounted bag by Restrap for spare kit. Salomon running vest for additional water and snack capacity.
GEAR HIGHLIGHTS: My sleep system is a Tarptent Aeon Li tent, Sea to Summit pad & pillow, and down sleeping bag by Feathered Friends. Lighting is dual Fenix BC26R’s with spare batteries. I’ll have ~40,000mAh’s of power banks, and a combo of Wahoo ROAM + Garmin eTrex + Garmin Messenger for data, navigation, and tracking. Insta360 action camera for documenting the experience plus an Audible subscription to keep my brain awake. This finely tuned setup wouldn’t have been possible without the support of Rebecca Rusch, Jay Petervary, and the Be Good Foundation’s bikepacking scholarship!

BIKE: I’ll be floating down the Divide on my singlespeed Chumba Stella Ti. It has a 100mm Fox 34 step-cast fork, Wolf Tooth dropper post, and Hope Tech 4/E4 brakes. Vittoria Mezcal 27.5 x 2.25″, Son Dynamo w/ Sinewave Beacon, 32x17T gear ratio with Hope flat pedals.
BAGS: My bike is equipped with an amazing custom framebag and full-length top tube bag made by South City Stitchworks. I carefully crafted custom panniers that mount to an Old Man Mountain Elkhorn rack. In addition, I am using a Swift Industries Bandito handlebar bag and an Oveja Negra Chuckbucket.
GEAR HIGHLIGHTS: I am using a Garmin Edge 540 Solar and Peak Design handlebar phone mount for navigation. Another key addition to my bike is the bottle cage adapter (on the downtube) from Cyclewerks NZ, keeping my bottles accessible.

BIKE: My rig is Trek Top Fuel 9.8. The Full-suspension and carbon fiber helps to keep my teeth from rattling out of my skull on those fast rocky descents! I run a 28T absolute black elliptical with a 9-52T 11s e-thirteen cassette which gives me ample gear range. 29 x 2.1” Mezcals on DT Swiss wheel set, 1×11 Mechanical, RS Hydraulic dropper and suspension lock out. XT disc w/ over-over sized front rotor. Sid XX fork. Garmin XC-100 pedals.
BAGS: I’m pulling my Burley Coho-XC suspended bob trailer. It tracks well and has good capacity with the two external bags. I rebuilt the rear 16” wheel with a Shimano Alfine dynamo, the smaller diameter wheel turns a lot faster so it charges reliably even on those long climbs.
GEAR HIGHLIGHTS: My brother, Mike, got me a US Army issue modular sleep system bag—the full gore-tex shell keeps you well protected from the elements—especially when cowboy camping.

BIKE: I’ll be hoping to finish riding my Surly 1×1 single speed with a 36T chainring and a 20T kick ass cog in the rear (49.32 gear inches). I’ll be running some 27.5″ WTB rims with Continental Race King Protection tires. Cannondale Cruise Control front bars with some profile designs aero bars with a few modifications to work with a BMX style handlebar.

GEAR HIGHLIGHTS: My Colorado state pride shines through my MRP fork, and it keeps me grounded. I’m also fortunate to be touring the divide on a leave of absence from my job as an REI bike mechanic, so I am repping the Co-op with a few of their cycling bags.

BIKE: I’ll be riding the Tour Divide on a 2017 Orbea Alma with a Fox Factory 32 suspension fork. Front wheel is a hand-built ZTR crest rim with a SON dynamo hub to charge electronics. Rear wheel is a Mavic Crossmax Elite. Tires are 2.2″ Continental Race King Protection. For navigation, I’ll be using the Garmin Edge 840 Solar attched to a 3D-printed mount between the aerobars.

BAGS: I’m using a Rogue Panda frame bag with a Tailfin set up in the back with additional capacity to load the sides. Finishing off the frame with Revelate Designs bags. I have a 20L Sea to Summit dry sack on the handlebars to carry lightweight gear.

Mechanical SRAM 500% gearing. Hope crankset and pedals. Hope Tech 3 E4 brakes. co*ckpit is Profile with additional DIY cross tubes for lights, Garmin 830 and Quadlock for phone. Bar ends and short stubbies for additional hand placement. SMP Composite saddle.
BAGS: My rear Tortec rack has a Podsac 15L drybag, with additional storage under a cargo net. I’m using a Wildcat Ocelot half framebag so I can keep my bottles, I’m not a great fan of bladders. On the fork, I’ve got a couple of Brae 5L drybags containing a Therm-a-Rest pad and a Blacks 3-season sleeping bag. I have a 9L Apidura bar bag for carrying my Alpkit Soloist tent. Front stash bags for bits and pieces on the move.
GEAR HIGHLIGHTS: Lake shoes. South Western (London) Road Club cycling kit. Sinewave Revolution for charging off the dynamo. A small stove for morning porridge and tea, well, I’m British, don’t you know.

BIKE: My choice of bike is a custom Pässilä Bicycles Kytö titanium frame built by Tuurin Pyörä. The bike is the same as my Silk Road Mountain Bike Race setup. I have a new pair Vittoria Mezcal 29 x 2.25″ tires, SRAM 1×12 XX1 mechanical drivetrain, Son Dynamo hub.
BAGS: I use several bag brands. The Handlebar bag is Topeak, the saddlebag is Revelate Designs, the stem bag is Blackburn, and the top tube bag is Geosmina. I will be using an Alpkit custom framebag. I also have a 15L USWE backpack.
GEAR HIGHLIGHTS: I have made big updates to my hydration system. I will carry a lot of Finnish brand Karhu beer and a bear spray, of course. I will be using a Nordisk Lofoten ULW tent (500g), a Cumulus Xlite sleeping bag, a Therm-a-Rest Xlite Neoair pad, and a pillow. I bought a new Garmin 1040 solar GPS device for navigation.

Drivetrain is SRAM AXS 1×12; 10-50T cassette and 34T oval chainring. Pushing tire clearance on a Fox 32 TC gravel fork with 50mm of travel. Suspension fork and Eesilk seatpost to mellow my harsh. Schwalbe Thunder Burt 29 x 2.25” tires and no dynamo.
BAGS: Custom BroadFork Bags main triangle bag. Restrap Race Long top tube bag. 2x Revelate feed bags. Tailfin Aeropack out back. Sea to Summit dry bag holds my quilt up front. I’ll also be wearing a Camelbak Chase 8 to carry additional water and my bear spray.
GEAR HIGHLIGHTS: A solid mid-weight sleep kit with an MLD FKT eVent bivy, a Klymit Static V sleeping pad, and an Enlightened equipment 30 degree quilt. My favorite part of the setup is the aerobar part of the co*ckpit, which has some DIY bits to help hold my front light, water bottle, inReach, light battery, Wahoo Roam, Sleeping bag, and wireless blips.

BIKE: I’ll be riding the Tour Divide on a bespoke steel Quirk Overland flat bar 29” MTB with Rockshox 100mm SID SL Ultimate 3P suspension forks. I’ll be running the SRAM XX 10-52T Transmission at the back with 32T Hope cranks at the front, Hope Tech 4 E4 disc brakes, Beast XC30 carbon rims with a Son 28 Dynamo up front and Hope Pro 5 hub at the back. Carbon seat post and bars from Beast and a Brooks C17 saddle, as I’m British! 29 x 2.1” Mezcals.
BAGS: All of my bags are from Restrap in Yorkshire, UK, except the new Tailfin 4.5L Half Frame Bag. Restrap provides the 8L saddle bag, 1.5L race top tube bag, 2 x 1.1L race stem bags, and 17L bar bag. 3 x 1L bottles will be mounted on the down tube, and I’ll be carrying a further 2L in a USWE Airborne hydration pack.
GEAR HIGHLIGHTS: I’ll be sleeping in an MSR Hubba 1-person tent with a Rab down sleeping bag, Therm-a-Rest mat and Ajungilak pillow. A Garmin Edge 540 Solar for navigation mounted on a Pro Compact Carbon Clip-On with a kLite Adventure headlight. All my gear and components are designed and made in the UK where possible, including my steel frame made by Rob Quirk, just 50km away from where I live.

Alyssa Secreto

Age 33 / Colorado Springs, Colorado (USA)

BIKE: I’m riding my lil guy this year, an XS Litespeed Watia frame with a RockShox Rudy gravel fork with 40mm of travel, a SRAM GX Eagle 1×12 drivetrain that I got pre-loved from my friend Molly, paired with a Bombtrack 36T chainring and cranks. I built my wheels with guidance from friends at Elevation Wheel Company, a DT Swiss 350 that my buddy AJ pulled off a set of old tubulars and a KT dynamo in the front have been lovingly laced to 27.5″ Velocity Blunt SS rims and 27.5 x 1.85” Maxxis Ramblers. The brakes are tried-and-true TRP Spyre mechanicals, my butt is protected by a Specialized Mimic saddle, and she’s got flat handlebars with Profile Designs aero bars for this leg of her journeys.
BAGS: Mountain Laurel Designs Poco Panniers, Oveja Negra Small Superwedgie frame bag (they randomly sent me one that perfectly matched my grips and other bags!) with Apidura 3L bladder, Road Runner Bluff 1.5L top tube bag, not pictured but also from Road Runner is my Lil Guy fanny pack, my everyday purse/handlebar bag/1st officer on journeys big and small, super old chalk bag used as a feed bag, tiny Wolf Tooth dry bag attached to rack to hold tools and misc. dry bags.
GEAR HIGHLIGHTS: Sleep system is a Nemo Switchback pad, Big Agnes Torchlight 20-degree bag (super warm and comes in a Petite size) and a cheapo but incredibly solid NatureHike tent I can’t justify replacing based on cost/weight ratio. The biggest highlight of this bike is that when I ride it I feel like I’m powered by the love and support of my friends, family, and the incredibly cool bike community in Colorado Springs. She came together with parts, advice, and support from so many loved ones and local shops, from the staff at Criterium Bicycles, Angletech, and Elevation to buddies who listened to me wax on about frame bag sizing for far too long. She’s also got parts from a Bombtrack frame which is super meaningful to me because one of their Arise Tour frames acted as my heart and home during a year-and-a-half-long bike tour a couple of years ago. Special thank you to my partner Nic for all of the things, but particularly helping me land on a frame and build that feels like it’s part of me.

BIKE: My setup is built around a Mondraker Podium carbon hardtail frame with Continental Race King 29 x 2.2″ tires on NEWMEN Advanced SL X.A.25 29er wheels. The front wheel includes a SON dynamo hub. Front suspension is a RockShox SID SL Ultimate fork. The drivetrain I use is a standard SRAM AXS XX1 1×12 with a 34T chainring and a 10-52T cassette. To add a bit of much-needed rear comfort, I am running a Canyon S14 VCLS suspension seatpost.
BAGS: I am using a mix of Apidura and Cycl*te bags and a La Sportiva trail running vest.
GEAR HIGHLIGHTS: I spent quite a lot of time planning and optimizing my gear. I am pretty happy with the result. I tried to shave off weight as much as possible but I would’t sacrifice my Western Mountaineering Summerlite sleeping bag. It is lightweight, warm, and served me well in the past. I also like the Cycl*te Handlebar Aero Bag and the Canyon seatpost adds comfort without too much additional weight. I think the Lupine SL Mono front light is a great compromise of brightness and weight, the battery life is decent and it can be run off a power bank.

BIKE: I will be riding the Tour Divide on a 2023 Canyon Exceed CF SLX. I have modified it with wireless XX SRAM Transmission and will be running a 1 x 12 with a 34T chainring and 10-52T Cassette. Tires are Rene Herse Fleecer Ridge tubeless 29 x 55mm. Running a SON 28 Dynamo with K-lite light and qube tail light.
BAGS: Spreading the love with the bags, a Rockgeist frame bag and top tube bag, Relevate Designs 14L Terrapin seat bag, Robo-Kiwi handlebar bag, and feedbags.
GEAR HIGHLIGHTS: Loving the Lake Mx242 shoes, the sleep kit is a Therm-a-Rest NeoAir XLite NXT Sleeping Mat and Cumulus X-LITE 300 sleeping bag. All inside a Big Agnes fly creek, 1p tent. For navigation, I will be using a Garmin 1040 Solar and an inReach Mini 2 for tracking and keeping in touch with family and friends.

Age 40 / Guelph, Ontario (Canada)

BIKE: I’ll be racing the Tour Divide on Salsa Fargo Ti with a titanium seatpost and handlebars. I’m running 29 x 2.25″ Vittoria Mezcals and a 1×12 SRAM X01 drivetrain with a 10-50T cassette, 34T chainring, and AXS wireless shifting. My SON Dynamo will power the kLite light system. The grips and seats are by Ergon, and I’m running a Fox Factory Stepcast 34 suspension fork. I’ve got Profile Design aerobars in the co*ckpit for comfort.
BAGS: A custom half-frame bag by Thief allows me to maximize the space in my frame while utilizing the bottle cages. I’m running a full top tube bag, an aerobar bag, and two feed bags, all by Restrap. A 10L drybag sits on my Elkhorn rear rack by Old Man Mountain.
GEAR HIGHLIGHTS: I’m using an OR Helium Bivvy, the Z-Packs 30F Solo Quilt, and a Sea to Summit Aeros pillow. After popping multiple inflatable mattresses on past races, I’m bringing a short-sized Nemo Switchback sleeping pad, cut down to 2/3 width so that it will fit on my back rack.

Age 54 / Perth, Western Australia (Australia)

BIKE: I’ll be racing the Tour Divide on a 2017 Giant XTC with a modified 1×11 Shimano XT drivetrain (with power meter) with a 36T chainring (plus a manual 26T bailout chainring), 11-50T cassette and a Rocket custom carbon front wheel with a SP Dynamo hub. Front light is an Exposure Revo.
BAGS: The bags are a mixture of Topeak Backloader, Frontloader (used sideways to run under my aerobars) and Toploader. I also have a couple of bags from Rockbros to complete the setup. Three 1L water bottles are mounted on the bike with an extra 1.5L in a hydration pack.
GEAR HIGHLIGHTS: A Natuehike Tagar 1 is my tent (1kg) with a Sea to Summit insulated pad and a down sleeping bag. Navigation is via my Garmin 1030 plus and iPhone. Running a Garmin inReach for tracking.

BAGS: Real mix of bags. Upfront Ortlieb 4.1L Fork bags mounted on Old Man Mountain Axle pack. Custom Stealth frame bag, top tube Reverse, and Top Loader for electronics. Skin Grows Back feed bags. Ortlieb seat pack.
GEAR HIGHLIGHTS: I reckon my Brooks saddle. Going no chamois, so hoping molded to my butt! Running Klite and Exposure Axis spare light. RAB Ultrasphere sleeping pad, Neve Quilt, Big Agnes tent.

Age 46 / Tobin, California (USA)

BIKE: I’ll be riding (not racing) the Tour Divide on a 2021 Marin Bobcat 3. The bike features a new pair of Bontrager 29 x 2.4” tires, a 2×8 drivetrain with a 32T chainring.
BAGS: My bag setup is a Moosetreks frame bag, a Tubus Vega rear rack with a Hyperlite rear pack, a Moosetreks top tube bag, and a Leyzine Sweet Roll on the handlebars. 2L bottles will be mounted to the fork and downtube.
GEAR HIGHLIGHTS: A Big Agnes Tigerwall 2 will serve as my shelter along with an Western Mountaineering sleeping bag and Therm-a-rest UL Air Mat. I’ll also be carrying an Garmin Edge 830 for navigation.

Age 30 / Ashdown Forest (United Kingdom)

BIKE: My setup for the 2024 Tour Divide is built around a brand new Canyon Exceed frame which is a model I’ve ridden extensively over the last couple of years. Rigid Enve fork, -17 degree Zipp stem, Canyon carbon handlebars, Hope carbon seatpost and a Pro saddle make up the remaining parts. I have a XTR groupset with 36T up front and 10-51T out back and finally rolling on DT Swiss wheels with Hutchinson Python3 29 x 2.4″ tyres.
BAGS: I have a custom full frame pack from Straight Cut Designs which I’ve had for a couple of years, a 7L Apidura saddle pack on the rear, and an Apidura backcountry backpack.
GEAR HIGHLIGHTS: Custom G-Unit top cap, Caledonian Sleeper Train eye mask, Colgate sawed-off toothbrush.
